Reading fiction is supposed to develop a reader’s sense of empathy. This story certainly did. The authors written style quickly traps you into wanting to find out what has happened to Elizabeth, and how will Maud make people listen to her? Not having any experience of Alzheimer’s (which Maud has) the book demands that you take note of Maud’s emotions, and also feel the weariness of those around her. It is an emotional read that I think might be good for a book group discussion.
